Trying something new

voilebundle

I got a package in the mail today.  Several pieces of voile, ordered on a great sale.

voile2

Two are designed by Amy Butler, the rest by Anna Maria Horner.  The patterns are lovely, but my first thought upon handling them was “they are slippery!”  I’m comfortable sewing with cottons and opening this box made me realize that I need to get comfortable sewing with other fabric weights and weaves as well.  Because I’m a perfectionist, I fret over the learning process because I don’t want to mess anything up.  I’m trying to overcome this, and just dive in.  I’m thinking I need to do something soon with these lovely fabrics so I don’t get intimidated by them!

Some of these pieces will become quilt backs, but I’d like to use them in other ways as well.  What would you do with them?

Fabulous Finds Friday!

I have actually been looking forward to this post for a while.  I have a problem.  I love pretty things.  I just can’t really buy any of the pretty things I find.  Perhaps one day?

My favorite things right now are my new glasses.  I don’t know why I like them so much.  Perhaps it is because before I was wearing glasses that were A. so old I could hardly see out of them and B.  Only had one arm.  Is that what the part is called? I can’t think of the word right now.  One of my lovely children decided it would be fun to play with them and brake off one of the arms.  It made them rather difficult to wear.2013-03-08 19.22.33

I tried this recipe for Honey Mustard Pretzel Chicken the other day and it was delicious.  We all loved it and will most definitely be having it again.  Since I made it the author changed the recipe slightly.  I made it using the original recipe and loved it, but I am interested to try it with the changes that were made.Honey-Mustard-Pretzel-Chicken

My lovely sister got me these ramekins for my birthday.  For some reason I recently decided that I “needed” ramekins and spent all night one night searching for the right ones online.  I love how these ones are white and have little handles on them.  They are perfect.ramekins

As part of the resolutionary challenge that Emily has headed up this year, I am trying to refrain from eating sweets for the next couple of weeks.  I have literally dreamed about chocolate.  This is ridiculously hard for me, but I think I have now been sweets free for 2 days:) okay so that is not very good but hey it’s a start.  I really want to make these Mud Hen Bars when this phase of my life is over….

What I’m working on Wednesday…

I am working on a zipper quilt right now.  I have it all cut out {the worst part of quilting} and now I’m getting my strips together.  Such a fun pattern and beautiful fabrics.

And yesterday I finished my Scrappy Swoon Along Quilt!

I am in love with this quilt and how it turned out.  I LOVE it.  I learned so much through this process and I am so thankful that I got to quilt along with my sisters. I chose a black measuring tape fabric for the binding as I felt that all that color needed to be outlined with black.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis quilt has MANY imperfections yet I am so happy with it and looking at it makes me happy.

Gift Giving

I have been reading the 29 gifts book and I’m enjoying it.  It caused me to reflect today as I wrapped up a special package for someone I love on just how and why it feels so good to give.  I love wrapping it up and making it look pretty and knowing that the recipient will feel loved and important and happy when they see it.  I am not as good as a gift giver as I would like to be, so I am really practicing it this year.

It was so easy to make this birthday card, which I love to do.  I simply cut and folded the paper, added 2 stickers and a stamp.  It took less than 1 minute and yet it makes me feel happy to give someone something that they know I made for them with my hands.

Gift giving is a good thing.

What I’m working on Wednesday

I am by no means a quilter.  I know the very basics of sewing that I learned from a high school sewing class, but beyond that I really don’t have any quilting knowledge.
So I just make things up as I go.  Emily gave me an adorable little charm pack a couple of months ago along with some fabric to match.  I thought it would be perfect for a baby blanket for a little girl, and decided that I would use the fabric to make a blanket for a friend who is having a little girl next month. A little ambitious for me.

Jen made an adorable baby blanket for my little girl when she was born that you can see here. I used that blanket as my inspiration for this quilt top.  In other words I copied :) It is pretty much the exact same design except I didn’t have enough squares to make it quite as big so I just ended up adding a border around instead.  What do you think?IMG_6162Sorry my pictures are bad.  One of my goals this year is to figure out how to take better pictures….
IMG_6160 Not bad for my first quilt top.  I learned a lot from just doing it.  For example, make sure you are sewing your rows together on the right side. I messed that up a couple times, putting my blocks in a different order than I originally planned.  Oh well.  I was too lazy to unstitch but I think it worked out okay anyway.  I also learned about half way through that if you press your seams open, it is a lot easier to get your corners to match up.  Maybe this is common knowledge, or not actually true but I found that was what worked for me.

I also made an attempt at my first applique.   Other than a few spots where the fabric puckered I love the way it turned out:

IMG_6163

Now that I have the quilt top finished, I somehow have to figure out how to quilt it myself and do the binding.  Anyone have any good suggestions or tutorials they would like to share?  I could use all the help I can get.

Today I also did this little 5 minute project.  From a used peppercorn bottle I made a soap dispenser for my kitchen, since my husband recently complained that we don’t have one.

IMG_6174All I did to complete this project was take the pump from an old plastic dollar soap dispenser and cut a hole through the cork and glued it in.  Not a penny spent.  My kind of project.

Fabulous Finds Friday

I received the Liberty Love book in the mail yesterday. It was so fun to flip through and see the amazing projects. I usually don’t purchase patterns and books because I don’t feel like I am at the point in my sewing where I have enough finished projects to warrant the spending.  But I am in love with the Marcelle Medallion quilt and couldn’t resist on this one:

I also recently found these cufflinks and purchased some as a “just because” gift for my husband. He likes them, even though they are random.

I found this fun rug in Colorado last weekend for $14 at Home Goods. I need a new one that can brighten up my entry and I think it’s perfect.

I won’t even tell you about all the fabric I’m currently in love with, because we all know I’m starting to have a problem with that…. so happy Friday!!

Please share some of the fabulous things you have found!

What I’m working on today…

blockofmonth2

The quilt top is done!  After letting the blocks sit on my floor for more than a week, I finally got them pieced together and ready for basting.

blockofmonth1

I really wasn’t sure if I would like this quilt when it finally came together.  I learned (again) that I’m not very good at the block of the month thing.  I fall behind and then catch up all at once, then finish late.  The weekly quilt alongs I do fine with, but the monthly ones don’t work well for me.  And after sitting for a year, you never know if you’ll like it.

blockofmonth3

I really wanted to frame these blocks in a bright color, but every time I set one out I hated it.  In the end I chose a soft gray and it worked perfectly, especially with the colored posts between the sashing strips.  I used the last of my orange polka dot for the outer border.

Do I like it?  YES!  So much more than I thought I would.  In fact,  I keep looking at it, surprised at how pretty it is.   Next up I need a backing, and I think I might hand quilt this one.

Thanks for visiting!

Living Room Curtains

We desperately needed curtains in our living room but I couldn’t for the life of me decide what look I was going for.  So for months our living room windows sat, looking rather drab.  I saw this picture the other day and loved the metallic gold and white, but couldn’t find any fabric like it to make drapes with.

HOLIDAY HORI So I decided I would make my own by painting IKEA drapes with a metallic paint.  I love the way they turned out:

IMG_6072To paint my drapes I first ironed well, and hemmed the drapes.  I just bought 2 sets of plain white drapes from IKEA for $25 for each set.  It’s hard to beat IKEA’s price on drapes.  I then layed out a panel on my kitchen floor, on top of plastic in case the paint would bleed through (although I don’t think any of it actually went through.) I then used a piece of cardstock to draw a line from the bottom hem of the panel.  I did it all the way across the panel hopefully creating a straight line. I used green frog tape (it’s the best I promise.  I have used everything else under the sun and nothing compares) and lined it up with the line I just drew using the card stock and taped all the way across the curtain, making sure it was flat all the way and that the tape was bonded well to the fabric.
IMG_6049I used an envelope as my next unit of measurement.  I did the same thing with the envelope, lining it up with the line I just made with the tape and drawing a line all the way across.  Tape again, and do this until you have the desired amount of stripes.  I didn’t want my stripes to go all the way up, so I just did 4 stripes.  You really could use anything to do your measurements with.  I thought later that something that extended all the way across the panel, like a piece of wood, would have been an easier way to make the lines.  But that would have taken me a trip to the garage, and the paper and letter happened to be handy at the time.
IMG_6048 This is what it looked like with all my stripes taped off.  I used some extra masking tape on where the white was going to be so I didn’t accidentally paint outside the lines.  I suppose wider tape would be a better idea.  It all comes to me once the project is over. I then used a foam roller to paint with, and Martha Stewart metallic paint in Gold pearl I think.IMG_6050I love them.  Our room now looks like people might want to actually be in it.  IMG_6072IMG_6075 IMG_6095 I don’t know why but I have really been liking gold lately.  My husband was skeptical about the gold but he says he likes them.  He probably wouldn’t tell me even if he didn’t.  I have a few other gold accent in the room which tie it together really well.  Like this mirror that Kristen picked out at a thrift store:IMG_6108 I also have this antique sewing machine that someone gave me (can you say crazy?) and a vintage gold picture frame also from a thrift store that needs to be hung: IMG_6120 IMG_6125What do you think about the gold?  Am I as crazy as my husband thinks I am?

Finally.

last6blocks

It’s taken far too long, but at last my blocks for the Canton Village Block of the Month are completed.

Block #10:

blocks1

Block #11 (I might have these backwards, sorry!)

doublestar

This double star was one of my favorite blocks of all.  I just love that little star in the center, and have been considering making an entire quilt using this block.

Block #12:

splitstar

Now the question is what to use for sashing.  I’m thinking a light gray but am not certain yet.

blockofmonthsquares

And so they sit on my floor, waiting for a decision of some kind.  Hmm…

Wednesday: What I’m working on

I’m working on this flower canvas for my daugher’s bedroom.  I have a lot more layers to add but it’s a good start.

P2193801

For some reason I got it in my head that I am a ‘quilter’ now (since I have finished 1 quilt) and I signed up to do a swap.  This means that what I make has to be not only good enough for me but good enough that I am proud to give it away.  Which means I have been practicing a lot.  Here are a few so far (none of which make the cut for various reasons but I am learning).

For the rest of today I’m working on getting my family all safely home and warm in this snowstorm and then hopefully tucked in with hot chocolate and hopes of a snow day off school tomorrow.  Happy Projects to you!
